White hat is just a term for legitimate methods it can take in many many different methods. You have more chance of staying in the result in the long run

white hat seo are practices that are accepted to use in order to get better rankings, more traffic etc. these are techniques that are encouraged by the search engines. practices for both white and black hat seo including link building for example, but it is the way in which it's done that makes it good or bad.

both techniques can get you results, but if you use black hat seo, you run the risk of your website being banned by the search engines. this can happen by using software submission tools for bookmarking sites and directory submissions. if better to do thing manually as you will not be seen as a spammer

As long as google does not ban you its a white hat technique, if google bans you or penalizes you it becomes a black hat technique, its all in hands of almighty "G".

both white hat and black hat are seo. Both can rank you high. white hat is what google allows. Black hat is what google disallows.

Black hat is cheaper, takes less time, requires less efforts as compared to white hat seo. It is risky. You may get long term results but there is no guarantee.

If you are doing black hat seo, as said by the above posters your site may be banned any time. It rarely happens.

what you are saying is ho (human optimization) not seo (search engine optimization).

white hat seo is optimizing your page in a legal way,a way for which Google have no objection at all and that indirectly means optimizing for human,so that people searching through Google get valuable result,not the result which is for bots only.

I am completely agree with you and what ever you said is correct. White hat SEO is the most ethical way of getting SEO results instead of Black hat techniques.

Massive spamming, means opening multiple account by own site and submitting links like crazy could be defined as spamming and black hat. It depends on how and how fast you build the links.

"white hat" seo is just a group of arbitrary standards that marketers create to help them sleep better at night.

If you would listen to some people on WF, putting up an EZA article on acai berry and linking to their "how to lose weight" site is white hat but putting up a profile linking to their car insurance site is black hat. Give me a break.

Now, I certainly encourage people to avoid breaking the law with illegal activities like cookie stuffing (which some people like to lump in with "black hat"), do what you feel comfortable with, and not what Joe Schmo SEO guru tells you relates to a certain color wardrobe.

P.S. By most of the responses on this thread, it is pretty clear that most of the folks here couldn't possibly make more than $50/month from SEO.
