Default Are .tv sites harder to get ranked than .com/net?

Title says it all. I have a product/service under the banner Splat.TV at the domain www . splat.tv

I am doing SEO work to get it ranked, but was recently told I'd have an impossible time knocking off my .com competitors in the SERPs... Is this a rule? Is there any truth to it?

Most of the organic results on page 1 and 2 for my main keywords are blog posts, forums, polls, etc... Stuff with low pagerank, and my two main competitors have pretty poor on-site SEO, and very few backlinks off-site. I was thinking it would be pretty easy to knock them out of their places, but now I am second guessing myself because of the .tv domain.
