Hey guys. I put put a site up last week and SEO'd the hell out of it. I'm happy to say that it's now on page one of Google. The number 8 spot. When I check out Mr 1 spot, his main site has over 7000 backlinks, but his particular page only has 50. For backlinks, am I competing with the site as a whole, or just this particlular page? Also, I somehow have nearly 750 backlinks myself, I'm not really sure how. I commented on a few blogs, maybe 10 and used a backlink fiverr gig, but that was only for 70 high pr backlinks. I aslo used an indexing tool, could that be it? |

Technically you are competing against the page, but you also have to consider the site's authority. What I've often seen is a situation where the competing pages have little or no individual backlinks, but the sites have tens of thousands or more. A large authority site can put up a new page and it can rank with just on-page SEO alone. That doesn't mean it's impossible to outrank them, just that you can't gauge specifically how many backlinks you need to do so. So, just keep building backlinks consistently. Assuming they're not actively marketing that page, then you should move up and eventually outrank their page. |

association has a lot to do with SEO. for example, I have no problem in stating that if the BBC put up a page on a certain subject and nobody linked to it, they still wouldn't have much trouble ranking based on the way that google already feels about their domain, their site, as a whole. having said that, a hugely focused site with strong backlinks and good content can over take an authority site, it just may take some time. |

| For backlinks, you're competing with the page. But don't forget that backlinks are not the only factor determining a page's SERP's ranking. Instances of pages with fewer backlinks outranking pages with more backlinks are common, in fact.

I think one other thing that the search engines take into consideration is site activity. Try to do something every day or two, whether it's adding backlinks or writing content. Some of the higher ranked sites are kind of stagnate, they don't constantly work on their site. |

The hardest sites to compete with are big authority sites who build backlinks to all of their inner pages. Luckily most of these big sites do not bother backlinking their inner pages, which is why it is fairly easy to outrank the likes of Amazon and Ebay when promoting various products. |

Why? .edu domains are not magical, they don't give you good results all the way around. Google likes edu sites, because of the content, and authority. Not ALL .edu sites have great content, and they get exploded with spam just like what you're considering! Quality edu back links are definitely important, but 10 of them for 5 bucks, they're probably profile links lol. 5k+ back links, might as well go for them honestly, but I'd rather build quality back links. | |
