Default Best way to check back links to a site?

Now that Yahoo site explorer is going away
what is the best way to check backlinks for a site?
I have Market Samurai but that never agreed with Yahoo anyway.

Checking backlinks isn't an exact science - each tool gives you different results. You can get some idea of what sites are linking to you from webmaster tools, or by typing "link:yoursite.com" in Google, minus quotes.

If you've just done a round of backlinking, most of the links won't show up yet - you have to give it time.

Agree with Johnny_h - if you just did link-building, it may take some time to see results or actual links acquired (search engines have to crawl the sites your newly acquired links are on) and most tools don't generate link data as it happens.

With that being said, some tools are:

1. Google Webmaster Tools (if installed on your site - it should be )
2. SEOMoz Open Site Explorer
3. Yahoo Site Explorer
4. Backlink Watch
5. Google Operator (link:mydomain.com)

Majestic SEO is pretty good if you filter out the crap. They need to work on a more intuitive user interface though and their subscription model is weird.

Whilst I like them, they only give in depth data on your own site once youŽve verified your site. Too limited, IŽd say.

Good tools there! Don;t forget Market Samurai though.

Every toold gives different results and just remember that the search engines never give away ALL your backlinks so you may have a few more than any of the tools actually show.

Google webmaster tools works well for me. But of course it won't help when trying to get data for MSN, bing, YaHoo and others. So I suppose it just depends on how detailed you want to get.

Every single comment I leave on this forum? If I see the same argument taking place I will add my two cents in. Sooner or later Warriors will understand that it is completely unnecessary to track backlinks. Are you saying my experience is not pertinent to this conversation?

All of them are off, there is not a real good way. Track the SERPS, the accuracy of those tools for backlinks are so way off it doesn't even matter. Everyone loves to measure them but I think its because people need to feel like they are accomplishing something daily and SEE things changing daily.

I think Yahoo's is enough, it reflects most of the links for any site you want to check. Not all your competitors' links fits you so you can try to find your own one and take others for refference.
