From what I have seen anyone that installs the alexa toolbar and then visits your site and each and every page you have within a 24 hour period will help considerably. Wait 24 hours and do it again. Don't visit the same link or page. Each individual link on your site counts with the toolbar enabled. Also it seems to be ip based, so if you do it from another ip it seems to count doubly. Putting that ugly alexa widget on your site does not seem to help whatsoever at least what I have tested. The biggest bump seems to be from the toolbar. So encourage your visitors or members to install the alexa toolbar and visit numerous pages. The more they visit the more it will help. Try it for a week or two and see. Most likely you will see positive results. Not that alexa is worth jack though in the real world, but go for it if it works for you.

I think alexa ranking is not that important. Try to do more submissions in social bookmarking sites, article submission & participate in facebook, linkedin & twitter will help to get good traffic to your website, if traffic comes automaticly alexa ranking will decrease.
