Default "Duplicate" Content Question

I recently started an article directory and was wondering... If I end up publishing some articles that are duplicates or near dupes of other articles within the directory, will the duplicate pages themselves be effected only or will a duplicate penalty effect the entire website?

Also, does anyone know of a Wordpress plugin that can search a blog for duplicate content as it publishes it onto the blog?

the duplicates will be ignored by Google, but your article directory will not be delisted. Just try to keep as much original content as possible on the site, and run articles by CopyScape, to make sure they are not duplicate, or being plagarized.

If duplicates are ignored, then what are you supposed to do if someone goes and copies your articles on their own site? Doesn't that mean you would get punished (ignored by google) by something you can't control?

And if that were true wouldn't it be a great and simple way to sabotage your competition? (not that i would do that I'm just asking because i want to know if people duplicating my content is hurting me, because i've found my content on several other sites that are not mine)

The duplicate contents will be disregarded. Use Copyscape.

Duplicate articles are not ignored. I have no idea why anyone
would say such a thing. Very seldom do the same articles
compete because they are not on like pages. EZA articles are
radically different and optimized in other ways than another
site that has the same article. Article sites mostly create
dynamic pages anyway, not a static article page.

Webpages compete for traffic. If your webpage beats the
others at a given moment in time, regardless of the same
"article," then you win. If not, then another one wins.

It would be quite remarkable to have duplicate articles "ignored."

no doubt. With panda running around I think by next year the activities of panda might be described as the genocide of spam sites. I am actually surprised it took Google this long to deal with it. The mass article writing and press releases never really made that much sense to me.

In the past I would agree with you, but with Google panda running around I do not think any of us can be sure of the implications of duplicate content anymore.

On this I totally agree, and I am surprised that so few people talk about it. It has a history of Google over a decade old now yet I still see people chasing around keyword density and mass back linking.

According to experiences of my SEO services, you should avoidduplicate content in your blog or website. The duplicate content willnot be appreciated on the index, although google still index, cachefor you. Many readers will be bored when they have no new contentto read. Blog is an individual rather than collective, so the new content and need alone.

Well, whenever it comes to duplication, google really gets angry by this. It might show your site the way towards sandbox along with the duplicated content, which won't worth at all.

Don't make it hard for you guys. Duplicate content issue is not that big if you will just make your own unique articles. If you don't want to waste all your effort, just write unique articles.
