Default I screwed up my keywords, now what?

I hate to admit it, but I probably screwed the pooch with the keywords I chose for world of warcraft's latest expansion: cataclysm.

With regards to my gold guide, I focused on ranking for "Cataclysm Gold Guide" and did very well. In fact, I'm #1-#3 consistently every week for my blog and the other two people who are up there are also selling my gold guide. So far so good right? Wrong! Look at these monthly search statistics:

Rank #16-#18: Wow Gold Guide - 33,100
Rank #1-#3: Cataclysm Gold Guide - 2,400
Rank #1: Wow Gold Blog - 2,400

The difference in the number of searches is ridiculous! I was expecting Wow Gold Guide to get smoked by my keyword phrase Cataclysm Gold Guide by around a month into the expansion. Several months into it and Wow Gold Guide has increased the gap if anything else.

How can I improve my wow gold guide ranking without damaging my current rankings for the other two phrases? I have tried adding "Wow Gold Guide" into my posts and when I do I jump to around Rank #12 but within a week I'm back to #16-#18.

Knowing that I put out content on a daily basis, what is the best way to get ranked without losing my other current rankings?

Thank you so much for your help/suggestions in advance,

Chris

The reason for WoW gold guide smoking Cataclysm gold guide is simply because Cata isn't the name of the game.

Not just that, but many players are looking for good overall strategies for gold and not just those specific to an expansion. I know your guide is solid and works for both, but as a searcher going in, it looks limited.

As far as what to do... anchor text.

I would: create a blog post specifically around "WoW gold guide".

Build links to that post that use wow gold guide as the anchor text.

Use another page of yours to link to the new page, you can use one of your other pages that already has the keyword in it... make it anchor text and link to the new page. This will give you a better shot at taking two rankings.

Then of course anchor text from that page directly to your product. From my listings your product is about 10 behind your blog. Boosting one can help the other.

Subdomain could work too, but it is essentially starting over. He has the links and such in place for the other two efforts making the job of ranking a bit easier.

By targetting new words, you can't 'screw up' your old words. Just start again. Not that I know a thing about World of Warcraft except that I 'think' it is a video game, but my guess is 'wow' is easier to spell than 'cataclysm' so I am not surprised by the discrepancy in search volume. At least you rank for the other term. Once all the players get a bit older they can learn how to spell.

So if I change my title from "Wow Cataclysm Gold Guide" to "Wow Gold Guide" you don't think that it will affect my search rankings for "cataclysm gold guide" ?
