are dot coms really that much more powerful (SEO wise) than say . net or .info?

Yes, just take a look at the SERPs. Google likes .com, .net., .org, .edu, and .gov that really it. .info's used to be really cheap to get, so they were used for a lot of SPAM.

I think .com is more likely by google because .info is used for spamming the websites.

No, not at all, form SEO point of view there is no difference but lot of people like to blame domain extension so they don’t have to admit that their SEO techniques are not so good. I certainly have not find any difference using .com or .info they all rank very well. As far as spamming goes then I have thousand of domains banned on my forum site because of the spam and 95 percent of them are .com’s.

I can agree if people say that .com is most well known but if you don’t have short type in domain than that advantage is not significant anyway.

The above comment is absolutely correct, TLD's have no real/major influence so from an SEO point of view there is very little difference if any. However from a marketing point of view .coms or the main TLD of your country, for example mine is .co.uk is the most powerful . When someone talks about the internet offline the first thing someone automatically remembers is .com and .co.uk.
