New to seo and a little confused

So im really new to SEO just getting started, so iv been working on trying to get my site ranked higher for its key word on google, bing, and yahoo. so iv been social book marking, and building back links. But what im lost at is why my site doesnt show up if i google the key words. But if i google the key word in quotations the site is on page 2 for yahoo and bing and page 7 for google?

so what does that mean? why cant i find it when i search, but if i search in quotes i can?

it takes time- just be consistent in your SEO and eventually you will rank.

If your website is under 3 months old, probably ya. Just do not do more than 10 backlinks a day early on or else that might make search engines see your site as spam and not rank you.

I built a new site in october 2010 and it wasn't even indexed for my main KW for 3 weeks, depsite building backlinks to it. That website is now one page one for a KW that gets 12,000 hits a month.

Bottom line, build backlinks consistently, it will rise.
