Hi, I'm having a bit of an argument with my hosting company. They're trying to tell me having links from 1 website to another which are on the same IP or 2 IPs with the same class C address give the same link juice as 2 websites on different class C addresses. They've quoted http : // interviews.slashdot.org/story/02/07/03/1352239/Craig-Silverstein-answers-your-Google-questions interview as 'proof' that it doesn't matter (see question 5) I know it's the understanding among SEO guys (myself included) that it DOES matter but does anyone have documentation (very unlikely from the big G, as they don't like to give that much away) or real world testing? Cheers. |

They're quoting a nearly 9-year old interview as proof? 9 years is ancient history regarding anything to do with computers or the internet, and I would be shocked if the Google algorithm is even remotely recognizable to what it was in 2002... I doubt there's any proof or recent comment from Google, but I think it's pretty easy to assume that class C address variation is better. As far as I'm concerned, neither of you is going to have any proof. I might be wrong, though. Maybe there's some Matt Cutts comment somewhere, or something. I'm sure someone here will know if there is. |

I am confused with this whole class C ID address, I have never bothered personally. Surley 2 links from the same class C IP is better than 1?

I seriously doubt having different c class IPs matters all that much, if the rest of the IP is the same. Plus there's too many other factors Google can use to tell if pages/sites are "affiliated", like host location, whois, etc. There's a very important concept in Google SEO called "Hilltop", which IMO has always been ignored to a great degree by "SEOers" that concentrated too much on PageRank. Hilltop is simply the concept of Google trying to tell if pages are "affiliated" (owned by the same person or connected in other ways). Affiliated pages that link to each other won't pass as much link juice (if any) as pages that are considered by Google to be non-affiliated. And C block IP addresses is only one factor that Hilltop can use. If anyone is actually interested in how Google probably deals with linking, I suggest reading up on Google's Hilltop concept: google hilltop - Google Search |

What do you mean by link juice? Relevancy and PR are much more important. Authority would be in the top 3 as well. If the question is about linking up sites, the point is moot. Google loves sites like wikipedia, icanhascheezburger, gasbuddy, etc. that link up a zillion sites on the exact same IP. What do I always say? You'd be a fool not to. Paul |
