Default Need Assistance with what are good Backlinks

My son says no profile links so posting comments on blogs would not be good, is this correct?

Do I need to only then get permanent links on other sites?

IT is more beneficial to get in text links from articles that are dofollow and have high PR. Any site with a high pr that links to you will benefit you more than 50 little links on profiles. Also make your links on websites related to your niche....

A link is a link so wherever it is posted, it counts...A blog comment I think is better than a profile link because the former is dynamic and the later is static and can be buried any time soon if the page is not updated.

This is not always the case because you can get tons of bad backlinks that might actually harm your rankings. Make sure you get a balance of high pr and regular backlinks

No.

If he says "no profile links", then that means profile links are no good. What does that have to do with comments on blogs?

Profile links do tend to be pretty useless, collectively, I have to agree. A high proportion are never indexed and they often don't count for much even when they are. It's the only example that comes to mind of a "class of backlink" that's actually worse, collectively, than an "article directory backlink" (and believe me: those are pretty bad).

Blog comments, on the other hand, can be excellent. As long as it's an active, context-relevant blog, and your backlink gets indexed, and your comment adds enough value not to be removed.

Context-relevance is huge.

"Page rank" counts for something also, but not nearly as much as many people imagine, I'm sure. It's only one of many factors that determine how much a backlink's worth.

(The thread should be in the SEO forum, really).

Hey alexa,

Wouldn't blog comments be profile links or should I say a profile link?

otherwise what exactly is a profile link?

Hi Jeff,

They're unconnected. (Unless he's using at least one of these expressions with a very different meaning from everyone else, and even then I can't imagine what it might be?)

A "profile link" is a way of getting a backlink to your site by filling in (sometimes with automated link-spamming software) the "profile" on joining a forum, membership site or whatever. There's normally a space on those forms to fill in "your website", sometimes just with its url, and sometimes even with a keyword. Those links are called "profile links". Collectively, they're terrible. Most of the places in which they're readily available are defunct or semi-defunct off-topic forums which may or may not ever get indexed anyway, and even if they do, the backlink's going to be almost worthless. And if you're not contributing to the forum, filling in a profile there just for the sake on a link is really "spamming" anyway, and if the forum owner sees it (i.e. if the forum is active) he's quite likely to remove it, so most of them are only temporary anyway. Useless, undesirable, hopeless stuff. You can buy thousands of them at fiverr.com for $5 and that's because they're worthless.

Blog commenting, in complete contrast, gets your backlink on a current, active page of a current, active, context-relevant site. As long as the blog on which you're commenting is connected with "your niche" and is an active one. These are, by comparison, "high-class backlinks". They can be really good. The ones I do (by making suitable comments on relevant blogs, that add value to the page so that people welcome them and don't mind leaving my link there) are each worth - in "linkjuice equivalents" - several thousand article directory backlinks (those are in turn worth a little bit more than "profile links" but not a whole lot more). The thing to do with blog commenting is to imagine you're the owner of the blog concerned, and ask yourself "What sort of comment would I be really pleased to see here, that would really add value to my site?". If you approach it in that sort of "contributory" way, you'll have a high success-rate with them.

Alexa,

Thank You. I knew that profile links were not good but you gave me the more indepth explanation I needed. One last question, do you to all of your commenting on blogs yourself? My son signed me up for Brad Callens SEOLinkVine which is basically a comment spinned Commenting on individual forums and blogs takes time.

BTW I took your advice and posted a similar question about backlinks in the SEO part of this forum.

It depends on how relevant your comment is, it is not good if you post a spammy comment in a particular blog.

I read all kinds of opinions on backlinks, many are totally different. So what backlinks are good? Well, why not pick a site that ranks well and examine the backlinks. This will show you the links that made it rank well. Simple huh?

Backlinks from sites that rank well in Google are the most powerful. Just get one from CNN and see how your website ranks.

In my experience as an SEO, the most valuable type of links are the ones that are voluntarily added within the content (from other websites) to be cited as a useful resource by other site owners.

There are only 2 important factors for link's value these days:

1. The link's visibility (within the body)
2. The link's relevance (topical relevance of the linking page as well as the anchor text used for the link).

Anyway, there are also other factors that makes up a quality link, perhaps you can refer to an old post that I've made that describes the perfect anatomy of a backlink:

I'd say the best backlinks are the ones that come from a high PR site
the higher the PR is the better
