I have my blogs with Typepad, mainly because unlike the rest of the world, I have never been able to really understand Wordpress. This makes me feel incredibly stupid but it is what it is. Anyway, I never really thought of this until recently, but apparently on Typepad the first domain is the regular .com domain name but each additional blog is then a subdomain of the original. Now, I am wondering how this could affect rankings in the search engines. Anyone have any idea about this? If it will be a problem, I suppose I could try again with Wordpress since all the blogs are very new and not ranking anyway. Thanks.

Let me do some research. OK, back. Yes, this affects search engine rankings. Solution: You can use domain mapping: "Domain mapping is a popular feature in TypePad, available with a Plus or Pro subscription." Six Apart - Everything TypePad - Domain Mapping FAQ In plain English: You buy your own domain name and then you point it t your TypePad blog. . |

Couldn't I do the same thing by buying a domain then forwarding it to my subdomain blog on typepad? And if so, does this negatively impact the search engines? |

Forwarding a domain name is not the same as setting up a self-hosted website and managing DNS settings for that domain to point to the site. You're losing search engine juice just from that. Secondly, last I knew, you're not penalized just for the act of having sub-domains. But you won't gain any ground with them either. Just have a main domain name attached through DNS to your website hosting account and optimize from there. |
