Default Buying Website - SEO Penalties?

I'm looking to buy a website.

Does it keep its existing links/PR once it transfers to me?

Cheers,

Coz

Everytime I have sold a website or bought a website we had explicit conversations with the current or new owners about what will be necessary to maintain the site. We always made sure that anything that is currently being done to maintain or improve rankings were transitioned to the new owner so that the site will continue to hold it's value.

Afterall, Selling a site and having it tank a few weeks or months later can really make one look bad.

Hi Coz,

No, it does not always keep it's links and PR. It all depends on who placed and controls those links.

One of the more common scams in the website flipping business is to point some high PR backlinks, from a site(s) controlled by the seller, at a relatively unknown or new website and, after the toolbar PR update comes out, sell that website to an unsuspecting buyer and pull those links as soon as the deal is closed.

I recommend that you investigate the source of the links pointing at the website, especially any high PR backlinks. If they come from a website that is under the control of the seller then you should assume that the PR will vanish the moment your money is transferred.
