Default Exchanging Links: Traffic builder or oh-so-1998?

An acquaintance just joined a networking group that I'm involved with.

Most of the people in the networking group are old-school and still think the best way to promot their business is by exchanging business cards, hanging up flyers on local bulletin boards, etc.

So this new acquaintance comes along and tells everyone that the best way to get more traffic to their web sites (several of them user Blogger) is to exchange links with her.

Am I missing something here? I thought link exchanges were a thing of the past and put you at risk for being considered a link farm.

Thoughts?

Yes, link exchanges did work in 2000.

But on the other hand, if you talk about adding people to the blog roll, it has some workability. Especially if the other sites are related.

That is pretty old school.

I've never used that technique and have received millions of visits to my main site.

I guarantee you that it isn't the best method!

Defintely not the best method but that doesn't mean they don't work.

Rather than just 'sharing links', a better option is to write a guest post on each others blog and introduce yourself to their audience. You then just aren't some link hanging out in the sidebar with tons of others.

Direct link exchanges are something I use for SEO purposes all the time with great results. I haven't had any luck with traffic results from them though.

exchanging links still works good if you exchange links with websites related to your site. The only things is that its very time consuming. Most link exchange services does not have quality websites or only a few.

I do agree with this. But link exchange can damage your site's quality for you are forced to host someone's links which are not relevant to your sites.

Absolutely. Only chase the sites that can get you referred traffic on top of the SEO benefits. It is more efficient working like that.
