I always felt the "benefit" of EMD's was two fold. 1. For most it meant their keywords appeared in the title tags 2. searchers saw a url that matched what they were looking for. |

It probably will be toned down for keyword type searches with low backlinks (xfactor style). I personally still see a lot of those when searching around google.

Recognize that Matt Cutts has his own (Google's) agenda, and those remarks shouldn't necessarily be taken entirely at face value. Empirically, there has been a lot of evidence that EMD's have already lost some of their weight. Michael |

Even if they lose some weight, I believe they are still worth it. Better to have some weight than none at all.

Yeah, they have lost weight like pagerank has lost weight.. so not that much. Every search I do I usually see the EMD's and at least the keyword in the domain. |

It makes sense for them to be given a bit less weight. Matt makes a good point about branding. That is a lot easier said than done, though........

An EMD can be beaten like any other page. Become more relevant and more trusted and Google will place you above the EMD. EMDs are often assosciated with trademarks so Google has to be careful not to punish established brands because of marketers...but EMD is nothing new. They have been used for years as an SEO positive. |
