How Long Until Backlinks Count and Question About Pinging

Just wondering how long until backlinks are counted? I've created a new niche site, and to add backlinks I've done a number of things within a strategy that Im implementing. Some of these things include blog posts, creation of web 2.0 sites with backlinks, profile pages on .edu forums, and link pyramids to other profiles i've created on numerous other sites.

So just wanted to know when my backlinks would start counting. Also, could someone please explain the proper methodology for implementing pinging? I've heard this term thrown around, and im actually quite confused and to what it is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated - thanks in advance!
