SEO Question: Which is better? Ten pages each having 1,000 words? Or one HUGE page of 10,000 words?

Suppose I created a niche website called samplewebsite.com. Would it be better for me to create ten pages each with 1,000 words about my topic? Or would it be better to have just one page with all ten articles on it, making the page 10,000 words long?

I'm just asking because I've seen LONG pages rank at the top for some keywords, and I was just wondering what you guys think about that.

The ten pages for sure. But you obviously optimize each page for a different key phrase. With just one page you would be diluting your keyword leverage... if that makes sense.

I think that applies here. It would be a much better user experience if your site was broken into 10 pages with relevant content for those keywords.

There are two upsides to this. 1) You site visitors are more likely going to stay on your site longer (especially if the 10 keywords are related) and 2) Google is more likely to rank a page that is focused on the keyword, rather than a site that just has a paragraph for said keyword--at least in my personal experience.

That makes perfect sense, but what if on the big page I had all ten of my key phrases in the title tag and header tag? Would that make a difference any?

That's a great observation. Usually the long page sites like that have in-page navigation links. The user clicks on the link to the topic they want, and they are taken to the section in the page that contains that information. Then at the bottom of that section, there would be a small link that says "back to top" or something like that. I suppose this strategy is just as effective as the ten page one, but I wouldn't know for sure until I do a split test.

I think either one would be fine as long as you were interlinking each one like a blog type format. however from a user standpoint I like the ten page approach. It just seems cleaner and easier to navigate and for seo it much more focused.

You will be disappointed with the results if you went the route of one page with 10,000 words. That is just too much in my opinion. You will notice many article sites have a cut off on the amount allowed. Even press releases which are content heavy cut off around 1000-1500 words.

You're just wasting possible keywords if you put it all in one page. Plus, the user isn't going to sit and read through 10,000 words if it can be summarized in 10 different topics and pages.
