Default Broad vs. Exact search

Hi,

When you do your keyword research which result do you think should be used? The one that you get for the broad search or the exact search?

How is exact search exact anyway? I mean, an average internet user probably doesn't even know that brackets and quotation marks can be used when searching for something.

So shouldn't we take the broad result as a starting point?

You're talking about using Long-tail and Short-tail keywords right? Some say that using long-tail is more efficient in link building but it takes a long time to get the results...
