Default Not getting indexed with low competition keyword?

I am not understanding what I am doing wrong here. If somebody can help me out I would so much appreciate it.

I have been working on a site and getting indexed with a particular keyword. The keyword has many searches a month, and very low competition. I have been creating backlinks by forums, dofollow blogs, and yahoo answers. I also link my site on facebook and twitter. I use anchor text and sometimes just link my site. I try to make sure each and every one of my backlink posts are unique and beneficial for the site I am posting on. I have been working on it for about 2 months now.

Not even in the top 100.

I have looked at my competition's code and the keyword doesn't even appear in a few of the top websites! Also, some of the websites that are beating me are just simple youtube videos.

Can you help me figure out what I am doing wrong please?

could be a lot of things a) your research was flawed initially b) you have privacy turned on (if it is a wordpress blog) c) might just need more time to show d) the sites that you left links on might have been penalised in the G farmer update e) some of the sites might not have approved your comments or may have removed/edited your links f) cyberspace weirdness. You don't say how long you have been doing this? If it has only been a week or so give it time.

Tip Re: Not getting indexed with low competition keyword?

There is a good possibility you are maybe in to big of a pond? Try something for me. Go to Google and Type your Keyword or words in there in Quotations Like "This" then hit enter then up right under the search box for google there is and estimated amount of sites built on these keywords. How many are there? More that say 20,000? If the answer is yes you are in to big of a pond. You need to find keywords that are in small ponds to really hit the big #1 in Google even fairly easily. Google is just such a well known search engine now it's getting harder and harder to find good Keywords to work with. Now if it's less than 20,000 then maybe check your on and off page SEO? I hope this was at least somewhat helpful for you.

Thank you so much. Yes it is a very very large number. But then, what does it mean when I use the keyword tool and the green bar box (the competition box) is almost nothing?

You need to check the Exact box on the left hand side of the keyword tool. This will search your exact phrase and give you better data.

That competition bar is somewhat clouded. It is only looking at how many sites are using adsense not how many authority sites are using synonyms for their main site that is carrying over into your main keyword. The better method is how bd69 recommended.

I believe the competition box is referring to AdWords competition, not competition as in the organic search results. The competition box would only be useful if you are planning to use AdWords to advertise your site.

So in a sence, when looking for a good keyword for your site, google keyword tool is not a good way to go huh?

But what I dont understand about what bd69 said is that anything under 20,000 is good? Well I only have one back link on a different keyword and I am on page 40 in google. Yet, the number is over a million. . . .?

More help please? Thank you guys all very much!

All that means is your competition for adwords, paid advertisement on google.

google's keyword tool is VERY helpful in keyword research. But, the competition part is worthless unless you are doing adwords. You can use google's keyword tool along with something like Traffic Travis' free software and get great results.

Search for keywords using google's keyword tool and find terms with the amount of searches that you are looking for that are within your niche. use Traffic Travis to measure the competition for that specific keyword. It will tell you how many backlinks the sites in the top 10 for that keyword have, as well as an idea of how those pages have optimized their on page seo.
