If I wanna create other context relevant blogs to link to my main site for backlinks how would I do that without getting penalized for such actions? Would I have to have each on a seperate host? What other considerations should I take into account? |

Keep them seperate, keep them looking natural and build them up with links and content over time.

Separate C Class IP's essential at the very least otherwise don't bother as you'll cause yourselves more problems. You could of course build a network of such sites using Wetpaint, Weebly, Xanga etc

so would those sites you mentioned at the end allow me to do so and keep the ips etc separate and wouldn't have to setup hosting for each? or I'd still have to do that? Also what is a c class ip? |

All web sites have unerneath them the IP number of the sector of the web hosts server that they are located on. Check Wikipedia for a more accurate and detailed definition but these IP Numbers (Internet Protocol) are split up into what are called Octets i.e sections of numbers - usually 4 at a time. If your sites are all on the same web host then it is likely they will share the same IP which is bad for SEO. A separate C Class IP (differnt numbers in the latter octet ) per site should provide you with enough sepration so as to make it look to all but the most experienced investigator that the sites are separate and therefore the links coming in from these sites will have the best integrity possible. That in a broad sweep is the theory. Most people blow it by having shared and not cloaked DNS details which is a bit of a gieaway and also share things like common advertising units which is also another Class A Giveaway. Hope this helps Steve

Same IP is a non issue. Funny you mention wikipedia, which has a zillion wikis.org's on the same IP. The internet runs on shared IPs. Do good things, and it does not matter. Having a unique IP is not going to save you if you choose to do bad things. Have multiple sites, same IP, linked together, is no problem. Why this is one of the biggest secrets is beyond me. People ask where do you get quality backlinks? Just like the big boys: From your own website empire first. Paul |

So using those sites I wouldn't have to worry about the IP stuff anyhow? Is it advantageous to use those sites over just throwing up as many as I want in wordpress and hosting them on the same host I'm using if IP isn't an issue? is it quicker/easier to use those/other advantages? |

Put it this way we have hundreds of domains and sites hosted worldwide on separate A, B and C Class IP's and we do it for a reason. If I thought I could get away with it all on one shared server I'd be there like "a rat up a drain pipe" and save a bundle but we can't and we can't for a very good reason. Sorry but anyone who suggests other than this is being disingenuous. The Wikipedia example is a complete red herring and is totally different. As a site it has massive credibility and therefore will pull weight (also from nofollow links as well) regardless. Your potential satellite network of sites does and would not therefore you have to get the basics right. Sorry to sound like a potential flame here but this is an issue that we see folks get screewed over time and time again because they don't get the basics right.

So how do you suggest I'd set it up with the sites you gave? Can I do whole 'nests' of websites via just one of those sites or one site per website? also are thee sites any different than 'blogger'? or the same deal? |

Keep it simple and nicely separate. That way the only investment is your time. If that works for you and you then uderstand the procedure well enough then embark upon your own network of private sites. This would however involve investment in domain reg fees, hosting etc

So what are the advantages of having them private vs. on standard free ones?
