what's the difference between .net and .com in terms of SEO

Hi

I'm trying to buy a domain.

The keyword.com has been taken, I'm thinking to get a keyword.net

Just want to make sure there will be no effect in terms of SEO?

No difference at all, at least none that Google will admit.

I use a .net extension and my site is doing well in google. I don't think there's any difference for top level domains.

There is no difference between it.
General users there is no difference.
.com's are used for Commercial organisations.
.NET's can be used for just about anything.

SEO does not affect by domain name extension.Extension is mainly used for that kind of website for which it create like commercial or organizational,government etc.The only important if you can do and that is use of target keyword in domain name.If you ll use it then you ll make your work easy to get your targeted keywords.
