Default Anyone competing with wiki?

I've found a keyword i want to SEO against, and its very little competition. The only problem is that the nr1 on that keyword is wikipedia, has anyone of you guys had experience with competing with WIKI, and maybe succeeding in jumping to nr1? is it hard?

thanks,

You can definitely succeed against wikipedia but it's going to be tough to knock it off the first spot. It probably ranked there for the keyword for quite a while already so it is going to take you longer than usual to take over that spot. Wikipedia can definitely be a pain to outrank in some niches.

thanks for the response, btw does anyone know the statistic for klicks on each position? in %. If I'm not mistaking its 70% on nr 1, 20% on nr 2, 3-4-5 the rest. Something like that?

If your exact keyword phrase isn't in the title tag of the Wiki page, it's usually not too hard.

interesting, unfortunetely the title is the keyword. But lets hope that people click away from wiki. To be honest, i have no idea if the people searching for this term is looking for, either info, or actually buying. Its a common keyword like car, doesnt say ****. but low comp and potential profit makes me itchy to try this.

any thoughts?

Well, then just go for it, if you say the competition is low and you think you can beat all the other sites on the first page. Even if you hit the 2nd spot, that's still great. There are lots of different stats out there above traffic in spot 1, 2 etc. and they are ALL flawed. There is nobody who can tell you how much traffic you'll get in any of these spots, you have to test it.

The amount of traffic you get doesn't only depend on your position but also how well your title/meta descr. is crafted, what niche you are in and in some cases it also depends on the keyword (if you want to rank for something like "sony abc LCD" and rank at first position, you'll still get less traffic than if the manufacturer is ranking below you, like sony.com/abc-lcd) etc.

To figure out in how far your keyword is an info or buyer keyword, you could check out this commercial intention tool (from msn adcenter, though right now it seems to be offline for some reason).

Hope that helps.
