One of my website went from being #2 in google to no where to be found. Before you rule that it was a "Google Slap" I want to share some info about this. 1) I have about 3 other domains first page, made the websites the same time, and their still there. 2) I changed theme on the website about a week ago (Could this be it? Should I change it back? Anyone have any Ideas? Thanks, Jeremy |

Theme shouldn't make a difference. Are you sure it was EVER ranked to begin with and not just your configurations, were you logged into your google account? If you changed the theme.... the images in the theme, were they optimized before? Does it contain a lot of uncompressed javascript? Are all your tags the same? |

How long ago did you build the sites? Anything less than a few months old can dance around like this.

If you change your theme it will sink your site in the SERPs. The only way it wouldn't change the SERPs is If both themes had the same setup in the source code, I doubt they do If your asking here. Quote:

"Basically", changing the theme should not significantly influence rankings (if done right)...but usually changing the theme also brings with it other changes which THEN are bad for rankings. For example, if you were to change from thesis theme to another (or vice versa)...all the SEO information would be lost unless you export/import it. Not all themes do the same "SEO stuff" internally, there are themes which set Titles in H1 tags and there are themes which dont. If you would change such a theme it would also mean a significant change in on-page SEO. *IF* i change themes there is always quite some work involved to make sure that everything, from the URLs/permalinks..to the META tags...to the H1 tags, descriptions etc. stays the same! But if someone does not know this its likely that changing a theme will also be bad for rankings..so it needs a certain knowledge about where and what to tweak to keep the important stuff the same. |
