Understanding Markets and Knowing if you can Seo for them Help Please!

Hi eveyone

Just wondering if someone could help me with understanding and knowing if you can enter a market or if the competition is to strong.

I understand most of the different ranking factors that and how they play there role in ranking different niches competitors sites, but I find when I do research that there are allot of competitors sites like amazon that have massive domain backlinks and no page links and no onpage factors( like header, title, url and description).

And then below them there might be a website that is super relevant and they have allot more links to the page say around 11,000 and 15,000 domain links and fully optimized on site seo and they will not bet the amazon ranking. And I know that this would have to do with the amazons trust factor and maybe the other guys sites links don't have the right anchor text, i understand and could make up reasons/ scenarios why it might be be ranking etc and I know that these could be possible answers, but.

So I was wondering if anyone with experience in knowing if a market is approachable through SEO, if they would be kind enough to explain or show me different case scenarios.
