Default Stupid question of the day: How to comment on a blog post for SEO?

Hi Everyone.

I am super new to this whole SEO thing, and I've heard that blog posting is a good way to get backlinks.

I found a blog that has the following fields to post a comment:
Name:
Email:
Website:
Comments:

I've been filling these out in the obvious way, and my name comes up as a hyperlink with my website and I don't get an anchor text with the keyword that I want. I show up like this:
Pete says:
(my name is the link back to my website)

I thought that was how it was done, or that I had to use my keyword as the name, which I think looks spammy as all get out, and I don't want to do that (plus when I do try doing that, it seems like my comments don't get approved nearly as often).

I just saw someone else left a comment, and their name showed up as regular text, and they had a keyword followed that was a hyperlink to their website. It looked very tasteful, like this:

Jerry from Penny Stocks says: (and then a relevant comment to the discussion)
(Penny Stock was a hyperlink to a stock trading web site)

Can someone explain to me how to comment on a blog post like this, so that I can get my keyword in there like Jerry did?

Or just in general, whats the right way to get anchortext backlinks from blog comments?

Oh, and one more thing: When I make backlinks, should I make all anchor text the keyword that I want to rate for, or is there an advantage to doing related keywords in some magical proportion too?

Thanks a bunch everyone!
- Pete

afam4eva, There has to be something more to it than that. When I fill out my name and the website, everything in the name field becomes the hyperlink.

Someone was able to make it so their name and the word "from" was not hyperlinked, and then their keyword was hyperlinked, all in the same line.

(Mine looked like this: with the stuff that was hyperlinked shown as an underline
Pete says: (My comment is then listed)

Theirs was formatted so it would look like this:
Pete from Maskers for Tinnitus says: (Comment is listed here)

See? My way gives me a backlink for the word "pete". Their way idenfites a person with a name (no backlink), and then applies the backlink with the specific keyword they want, "Maskers for Tinnitus".

The hyper link is in the name! but be careful I have had serious issues trying to place my keywords in the name. a lot of bloggers simply mark it as spam. Also, try using comment luv. This helped me.

App Developer, not trying to appear more daft than I am, but do you mean to say that they did something like this:

Name: Pete from <a blah blah hyperlinkstuff>
Website: (left it blank)

Can you really stick hyperlinks anywhere like that?

(cautiously optomistic),

yes giving your keywords as hyperlink in the name section may be risky and some blogs mark it spam and they wont approve it.....

This is why it's a good idea to play around with different keywords. Also, check out the comments above and see if they allow you to post links within the comment. Some people abuse this and list about 20 sites, but I usually try not to take advantage.

Most comment modules/widgets do not allow you to add HTML in the name field. I generally use my company brand name (ie; BrightIMarketing) or something like "Marketing Solutions" (a keyword phrase that sounds like a business name).

Don't forget about the comment area itself. Write a good comment that weaves in your keywords and add a link back to a related article or post on your own website or blog.

You also want to consider the fact that if the blog on which you leave the comment is related to your own niche or market is interpreted as community participation by Google. That means that by default, your comments will contain your related keywords.
