Killer Keyword Article - My Site or Backlink?

Okay, so let's say I have a great long-tail keyword that relates strongly to my site and I could write an article about it and have it make sense - strong SEO and whatnot. (I use the Google keyword tool for most of my articles so my keywords will rank on page 1). Am I better off putting the article ON my site, or should I consider posting it to a Web 2.0 site or article directory with a backlink TO my site? My backlinks are crazy weak right now, and I'm trying to come up with ways to get some decent, organic backlinks to boost my SERPS.

I'm not too keen on "spinning" articles, though I suppose I could do total re-writes with the knowledge I have from writing the first one. I want to add 10 new articles to external sites with backlinks to mine this week. Suggestions and advice will be appreciated.

If the same article you are posting to article directories then it won't be good for your site as article directories are quick in indexing and content would be indexed before your site indexes ..

Well, for example, I just wrote a 700+ word article related to my site content. The keyword phrase has a lot of exact searches. I was thinking of putting it on an article site like ezine or free library, but I HATE to "give up" a good article instead of putting it on my site! Maybe I just need to get over that. I have no plans to use the same article in two places, so I'm not worried about getting outranked by an article submission site on the same article.

I'm ready to post this bad boy, so your advice is much appreciated. Also, free library is ranked PR7 while eZine is PR6 (with PR5 in my category) - which is a better site to use?

I would always put it on my own site...no doubt about it!

put it on your site - once it gets indexed, then submit it to article directories to get referral traffic

If you have researched and created a 700 word article then you must put it on your site, you have probably spent a good couple of hours writing your article so why let someone else get the benefits?

If it is a really good article then use social bookmarking & article spinning to get some traffic & links...

Meh - took about a half hour to write - I have most of my info about gardening in my noggin and I was an English major, so writing articles is kinda breezy for me, if I may be so humble. LOL

I put it on my site and I figure what I need to do is work a bit on shorter (300-400) word articles targeting the same topic with different keywords to get the backlinks externally.
