Does anyone use subdomains? Question?

What is the best option for cost effectiveness? I want multiple websites.

1. Just get one hosting account for each mini site and use a SiteBuilder to build it e.g. wwwmydomaindotcom. I presume this is the best way but the most expensive.
2) Decide on the main site now, use it as the primary domain and create mini sites as sub-domains e.g. create something like wwwmybestdomaindotcom and then create sub-domains like niches.mydomain,com, BUT give it an alias wwwbestdomaindotca
3) Set up wwwmydomaindotcom as the primary domain, then create mini sites like ca.mydomain.com, au.mydomain,com etc
Any ideas?
Do subdomains work well for SEO?
