Default Which tool for this SEO task?

Hey Gang,

I'd like to analyze the top 3 sites that come back for a particular long tail in Google, Yahoo, etc. to find out how many backlinks they have for that particular long tail. What's the easiest, fastest, most economical tool or technique in your opinion?

Thanks for the help. I am sooooo close to that top spot on three of my sites but just can't seem to nab it. It's like trying to lose those last 10 pounds!

You may try something like spyfu or any of the other spying sites. It will not give you the exact keyword unless the keyword is the top ten or so keywords. It does not give you how many links are pointing to that site for the keyword though. Which is really what it seems like you are looking for. Besides that though you do realize that it is just going to give you a round number of backlinks which may or may not still be enough to outrank the other site. One thing I suggest is just keep building your links for your target keyword. Soon you will be rewarded.

You may use backlinkwatch.com to check the backlinks they have, copy the entire result in excel and modify the way you want.
Besides there are plugins for firefox that help you find that.

Yes, @petevamp, that is exactly what I am looking for. It would help me enormously with budgeting, more so than just a flat number of backlinks (I think).

I know there's more to the equation, like content, possibly PR of linking sites, etc. etc. but I'm on a par with the top ranking sites in those areas. I just want a way to target backlinks to a couple of long tails.

Muchas gracias for your reply!

~Jen

@BudgetSEO, thanks for your reply. Checked out backlinkwatch and maybe I missed something, but what would I modify in Excel? Or, are you suggesting a spreadsheet is just a good way to store the results?

Thanks for the reminder on Firefox - I always forget to check for plugins and there are often really nice tools there.

Backlinkwatch results can be selected and copied in excel sheet, pastes neatly and retains the hyperlink too.
I sort them for do-follow and no-follow, after that i sort them (do-follow) with keywords column, shows me how many backlinks i have exactly for the desired keyword.
I hope that helps
