There are plenty of useless SEO books on the internet and it has become hard to distinguish the bad ones from the good ones. I taught myself the basics of SEO and just learned to tweak it by networking with other successful people.

Yep still learning every day. Self taught just by hanging around on this forum. We're swimming amongst a lot of newbies and people that have never made a dime online, but we're also swimming amongst self made online millionaires. Hang around here and you can learn everything you need to know.

If you want details about optimizing, there are many factors and I'll throw them by most valued top 10 ranking factors in order as of this writing:

**1) Keyword use in Document title
2) Link Popularity of Website aka (backlinks)
3) Link Text of Inbound Links aka Anchor text
**4) Keyword use in Body Text
5) Age of Website (debateable)
**6) Keyword use in H1 Headline text
7) Keyword use in Domain name
8) Keyword use in Page URL
9) Links from Social Networks
10) Server Speed

**Densities make a huge difference and must be calculated correctly!

Several years ago I took an online class in seo and web marketing. It's a free course and it was very good. It gave me the basics that I still use today. The key is to take the information you're given and apply it to your site. I believe there were assignments, so be sure to do them.

It takes some time, but I have to say, it was so exciting back then (and still is!) when you find yourself on page 1 of Google.

I teach network engineering at a state college in the US. I asked the professor who teaches the SEO class if they would allow me access to the materials so I could see what I was missing. After going through the video lectures and 12 slide presentations, I can honestly say the academic world is way way behind on SEO. I learned more by being on a few forums for a year and experimenting on my own than I learned from that class material. They are still teaching reciprical link building as a main strategy. Most of the content was all based on on-page SEO.

I feel like I've learned a lot just from trial and error and forums, however I still don't know that much about on-site SEO. I feel like its pretty simple: use keywords frequently, have relevant meta tags and categories. I've heard a lot of people say that on-site SEO can get you to the top alone. If this is so, are they talking about keyword usage and meta tags? or have I misconceived what on-site SEO actually is?

SEO is little tricky but if you devote time you can really learn in by yourself or by a little guidance that will always keep you on track!

I would say have a guidance and keep moving on, it will save you a lot of time and energy!

I'm completely self taught as well. Read a lot of guides on SEO but the actual practical side of SEO is completely self taught for me.

Someone taught me some basic stuffs about SEO then I learned slowly as time goes by, I watched some training videos, tutorials, read articles. Just like you it is a self study.
