Default 404 Page questions

Anyone have any thoughts on what the best practice is with your 404 not found pages?
Should I just do a redirect to the home page, or simply notify the person that the page wasn't found and suggest other items that might be of interest?

A redirect is probably not a good practice. It notifies
the visitor of nothing.

It is best to do a custom page with a short message, like:

"That page is no longer available. Here are some links to pages
you may like."

Then give the same links as on your main page, or some combination.

But I would not recommend those type unless you have a very huge and
popular website.
