Question about searching with and without quotation marks

When doing a search for keyword phrases in the Google keyword tool, I click the boxes for [exact] and for phrase, the results show 33,000 results with quotes and 27,000 without.

Does that mean that is a total of 60,000 searches for those words?

How exactly can I interpret those results?

Only pay attention to the results number without quotes, it is where you can expect to receive your traffic if you rank for the keyword phrase typed into google

If you're using an exact main domain it might help you rank well when you target an exact keyword. Any keyword that has 33,000 search per month is very good and if you get to the first page of G00gl3 you can make good money. However, with this volume of monthly search, your website might be competing with authority sites.

Hi Joe,

In short the exact match (with quotes around the keyword phrase) is simply a subset of the broad match. It will always be smaller than or equal to the broad match in terms of results. The two are not mutually exclusive.

You use the exact match to find out an estimate of pages that actually rank for a given term. This is not to say that pages without an exact match can't outrank you in the SERPs because they can but the exact match helps especially in SEO for evaluating how much competition you might have for any given keyword phrase.

Ok, I think I understand this, but how about in relation to each other(exact and phrased), excluding the broad match?

Yeah. Just use the naked keyword(s) when checking competition. The only time we use quotes is when;

1. we're checking to see if one of our new writers is selling us duplicate content already published online.
2. I'm checking blog commentors to make sure they are not spamming

There is alot of misinformation in this thread!

Exact Match = the exact search term and the associated number of searches each month. So if you search for the term [business ideas] and you get a value of 50 000 searches that means that there are 50 000 searches a month for that exact term.

Phrase Match = the exact term plus an added phrase. So the phrase match will include keywords like - small business ideas, home business ideas, business ideas in houston, best business ideas etc.

When researching it is best that you look at the exact match search volume to get an estimate of the precise number of people who are searching for that term. Do not ever judge search volume by the numbers you get from your broad/phrase data.

Ok, I was thinking that this is what the Exact Match results were telling me.


But, I'm still not sure why the searches with and without quotations are saying 33,000 and 27,000, respectfully and (not in my original question but I'm sure they go hand-in-hand), the competition is a little different also.


I'm just trying to get to the bottom of this, whether it's relevant or not in the big picture.

I feel the case is almost closed on this one for me ! Hehehe

DON'T USE QUOTES WHEN DOING SEARCHES IN GOOGLE!

That is not your TRUE competition.

When doing your keyword competition/traffic research you look at EXACT LOCAL MONTHLY SEARCHES - this is as close as you're going to get to actual Google.COM monthly searches for your term.

Without quotes means your term (ex. big brown shoes) could be in any order:
this big girl named brown likes shoes

With quotes means your term has to be in order:
this girl likes big brown shoes on sundays

Google takes care of the rest.

Exact Match will always show the least search volume and phrase will be slighly more, and lastly broad will be the most.

Exact match will be the least because it is only focusing one exact term like [business ideas].

Phrase will be more because includes phrases at the beginning of the exact or after like the best business ideas and the others I mentioned.

Broad is the most because it includes any and every term where the words "business" and "ideas" appear like: marketing ideas for small business.

The comepetition your are looking at is associated with adwords advertisers and it shows how many adwords advertisers are bidding on that keyword in terms of competition. It has nothing to do with the organic results, so do not assume a low competition keyword according to the keyword tool represents the competition in the organic search engine results pages.
