Default Should you point your backlink urls to the individual page or your whole site?

Point to your root site or to the particular article with keyword in it you are targeting?

Does it make a difference?

I have been doing both...

I just focus on making sure inbounds are pointed the permalink (individual article or post on your site/domain). The odd time I'll direct links to the home page, but not as critical.

If i would not have an autoblog, and i would have made my posts myself, then i would target a particular article.

You should target each single page specifically for a keyword/keyphrase. Your homepage (or root site as you put it) is also a single page.

If you owned rockcollecting.com, you would try to make backlinks to your home page for the keyword "rock collecting". Once that ranks well, make new links to your homepage for related keywords such as "rock collection", "collect rocks", "rock collectors" and the like.

If you had a post that lived at rockcollecting.com/granite-polishing, you should then target links to that page for the keyword "granite polishing". Don't bother linking to your homepage with the keyword text "granite polishing" because that page isn't about that, it's about rock collecting.

I generally point links with my 'root' or main keyword phrase to the home page. Then as suggested above, optimize individual pages for additional keywords and link to those directly.

Hi,
I agree with the above you should link to all pages including your home page. You don't have to be to regimented about it but there should be links to other pages it would be unnatural only to have links to your main page.

You can point your backlinks url to individual pages with quality content on each story that you will link on.

I'm also concerned with whether overall backlinks still count towards particular keyword rankings in the SERPs.

Say I had 100 overall pagelinks for the front page...would they count towards my rankings in individual keywords (which would prob be in individual pages on the site for each article)...or would it be the equivalent of having 0 backlinks?

I'm guessing they must count for SOMETHING? even if not directly linked to the specific page?

Depends on whether or not you want to rank individual pages or posts. G ranks pages, not sites. If you want to rank the homepage, link to the homepage. If you want to rank a post for a specific keyword, link to that post with the keyword as anchor text. If your competition is not too strong, many times you can get a double- or triple-listing in the SERPs by linking to different pages/posts.

Depends on your site. If it is just a small niche site and you want to rank just your home page for a few terms, just focus on your homepage. If the site is a big project for you and you want to rank several pages for several different terms, you should be building links to your inner pages as well, the added benefit of this is that it shows google your site has some quality content and will help you rank easier.
