Which is better, a long .com VS a short .co name? .COM vs .CO pros or cons.

I have some domain names that I can get in the .co extensions, but the .com and .net are taken by companies that just sit on tens of thousands of good .com names, but do nothing with them except link farm pages.

Should I buy a good .co name if it is not trade marked and fits my market perfectly or go for a longer .com name?

Anyone here using .co domain names for their marketing?

I hear this question a lot. Many people suggest purchasing a .com / .net / .org domain name for the best results with Google. Honestly, Google doesn't give a rats .... about your domain extension.
What Google does care about is the content on your website, and the links that connect your site to the rest of the web. Useful information will rank better than useless information, and sites with many backlinks will rank better than sites with no backlinks.

What I can find and read about this is that the .co is really new and just has not caught on yet, I don't see to many .tv or .mobl. I hear Yahoo indexes the .co good.

It's just that some good names are available in the .co extension.

If you are doing micro niche sites, then stay away from .co as it will take much more effort to rank it higher in the search engine.

It takes more time to rank .co names than it takes for .com. People are also more used to .com names and could easily type your domain name. If I were you, I will get creative and come up with some good .com domain names. You can easily flip the .com name whenever you no longer need it and people will opt for it.

Just go to Google and type in your keywords. Notice how many results come up with a .co domain.

No matter how secret Google keeps their algorithm, the results don't lie.

Short .com are more better... .com is more trusted and short is easier for you customer to remember.

In theory, Google doesn't care about the domain extension. But I personally rarely see .co sites ranking highly in Google.

Take a look at the keyword you're trying to rank for, and judge if the short version of the keyword is valuable enough to try out a less common TLD for.

Forget it, .co is a country code (for Columbia). With geo targeting by google it will be very tough to rank outside Columbia.

Completely untrue. Google is treating the .co just like the .com and if you want to make sure they do, although it is not necessary, just use webmaster tools in Google to set the geotargeting.

Pros of .co ... lots of good domain names left and they perform as well as any domain given the amount of backlinks and SEO done.

I have quite a few and have no traffic outranking .coms that have fewer backlinks.

personally I use .com and .net.
I always have stayed away from the other domains..

but I wonder.. just because we don't see .Co or .biz ranking on the charts too often.. does that really tell us anything?

I mean really.. how many .biz, .info, etc. domains do you see out there that people do heavy seo and backlinking on? lol.

I think most people that are about to spend alot of money on SEO think the exact same thing that I think.. If I'm gonna drop some money on SEO I better get me a decent domain first ;P

So maybe that's why we don't see these domains ranking?
because the majority of people that get 'em don't do any serious seo/backlinking on it?

I'd be interested to hear from people who have tested both .com vs. other domains.. had similar sites and did similar seo on it.

I can tell ya this though. Most people still are used to .com / .net and feel alot more comfortable with it.. so if there choice is to click on either a .com or one of the other ones... they are probably more likely to click on the .com for familiarity.

And Google monitors your clicks. If nobody is clicking on your page.. Google might start dropping you

I did go with a longer .com name, but also go some of the shorter versions of the name in .org and .co for linking to the .com longer name.

Figure to play it safe, some people I know never hear of .co or .tv

there are so many variables to think about - i have a .co for my personal blog but to be perfectly honest - I would always go for the .com or ccTLD (Country code TLD e.g. .co.uk
if I am targeting the UK) for my money sites in my various niches because they will always resell better when I come to sell the business.

If you are going to rely totally on search then get the best domain name you can with either .com or .co. If you expect people to type your domain name in then only get a .com. People naturally type .com and if there is a .com like your .co (highly likely) then you will lose that visitor.
