Default The New Google +1 Feature and Implications on Our Sites

Not sure if this has been brought up here on this forum much, but Google is going to be implementing a new feature called +1.

Just like the Facebook Like button, Google users will be able to vote on your web page if found in Google's results.

If this is implemented and remains (likely will), I believe that gaming Google will be almost impossible, because even if you link the heck out of your site's pages and posts, unless the content is helpful to the visitor, in time your pages will fall down the results.

Our only defense is write extremely helpful content for our users. The times they are-a-changin'

You can be part of their testing platfrom here;
Google Experimental Search

I don't have any inside sources or anything...

But I am betting they scrap this feature, and if they do implement it, no one will use it.

The biggest problem they're going to have is how people are going to manipulate it.

I think Google is just now starting to understand that while have 10 gozillion pages indexed, it's pointless if they're all garbage.

I think the opposite will be true.

How long do u think before some software comes out which automates the clicking of the +1 button, with proxy support etc.

Also many services like on fivver where u can buy +1 just like u can buy Facebook likes.

This makes "gaming" even easier.

I read somewhere that Google doesnt use the +1 data as a ranking indicator but then again we also know that Google lies.

This is googles attempt at breaking the social scene, google buzz anyone??

I'm with Daniel, this more than likely wont last

Andy Hart is exactly right. Never underestimate the ingenuity of a race of people (human) who can mold chess pieces out of toilet paper.

Google clobbered Yahoo in the search engine wars by automating web crawling and indexing.

Is Google on its way back to the old way, human reviewed content Yahoo style?

I sure hope you are all right about this because we have all invested allot of time and money learning how to rank our pages in Google.

I was just having lunch with my wife and we were discussing this. Like you all said;

  1. paid web site where you pay a network of people on different IPs to click +1
  2. bot clicking of +1 on proxies (though Google can see proxies and will stop it in my opinion)
  3. and of course the old fashioned way - get in a van and drive around the States logging in to your Starbucks account and clicking +1 on your pages and posts ()
The manipulation market would expand nicely, thank you very much. There would always be some way to have random IP clicks.

Yeah. The only people using it will be webmasters and companies clicking their own +1s. 90% of clicks will be from the marketers themselves.

If Google is smart they will shelve this lemon before it gets squeezed.

Don't know what I would/will do, but focus writing the most helpful blog posts for readers.

At least users can't vote a negative. Really though, how many users are going to "love" your piece of content so much they are inclined to click back to Google and give you a vote?

The whole thing sounds like more of a problem for Google than a plus.

Okay here is the problem that I see with this. Bare with me here, I will try not to get on soap box. I recently saw a TED talk video that explained how we got our search results and it was suprising that we are in these area called bubbles. Well each persons results can be just a bit different. Yep I said different, it depends on what they search for and how they browse the internet. So the short of it, my #1 may not be what you have for #1 for the same keyword.

So now think about adding that like button, well it does not work for the whole internet, but it keeps you from seeing something you might have liked as much or more, because google is going to keep your preferences and show them to you more.

It is kind of scary if you think about it. I only hope this experiment goes out the window. It will not benefit anyone but google.

Sorry soap box put back under the desk.

Still struggling to get where you want to go and make the income you want? Stop struggling and find the solution.

You dont have to allow google to "personalize" your results, it works only if your are signed into a google account, and even then you can go to your settings and turn that feature off, that way google cant "keep you from seeing something you might have liked"
