Default How Important Is URL Age?

My site's url is not registering an age at all on SEO Quake/web.archive.org. And I don't know if that's something I should concern myself with or not.

I know that actual age plays into a site's authority or trustworthiness and perhaps PR, but do I have to do something (apply at web.archive.org, etc.) in order to make my site's age (going on 3 years now) explicit? Or is this all just so insignificant I shouldn't waste brain-power on it?

Thanks!

Ken

I think a lot of people get confused about domain age and it's advantages. Think about it logically, which is exactly what Google would be doing. The age of the DOMAIN is not as important as the age of the WEBSITE on that domain.

If I purchase a domain name and don't do anything with that domain name for 5 years, many people will try and tell you that because my domain is 5 years old I will be at an advantage when I finally decide to put my website up.

Do you really think Google thinks like this? Why would a website on a domain that has been parked for 5 years be given any more authority than a website placed on a fresh domain - given that both these websites are going online at the same time? You may get a tiny little benefit but nothing worth worrying about.

The authority comes from how old the actual website is, NOT when the domain was registered.

The people who will try and tell you otherwise are the same people who try and tell you that building links too fast or from certain sources will get your website banned or penalized. This will never happen either. Anything that another person could potentially do to your website will never have the effect of penalizing a website - it wouldn't be fair. Those links may not help your website but they certainly will not penalize it.

Google thinks logically. Many marketers seem to try and over complicate Google's thinking.

Yes Google looks at the age of the site and not the age of the domain,I have one domain that I bought in 2003 but put a site on it in 2007 and they know it and only give that domain credit from 2007 on.

OK. good to know. My site is the same as my url. I bought and registered the url in 2008 and set up the site within a few weeks.

With that in mind, is there something I should be doing to ensure the website age is registering properly with whomever it is supposed to be registering with regarding site age? Or does Google know automatically?

Thanks.

Google should pretty much know automatically. I understand you are sure your site has been indexed by the big G. That's all there is to it.

If web.archive.org havent your site, SeoQuake can't show the age of your domain. It's nothing serious, that you are not there, but you should think about why, because it registers all successful sites.

I also think that more valuable is how many years that a domain is online with a site.

You can also help a new domain by registering for more than 1 year, a lot of the pros do 10.

Yes that's a very good point also,if you are planning to keep the site long term then register the domain for a few years at a time instead of just one year.

Link age is the key piece if you're wondering. However, those things are pretty minute compared to actually having greater content and great links. Link age won't matter if you have neither.

The current theory is that a domain that has been in existence for a longer period will tend to have a benefit in ranking.

However, a domain that has been in existence and indexed by Google for a longer period will almost certainly have a benefit in ranking.

We have all seen those domains with the GoDaddy advertisements or other host placed adspace. (Not only have we seen them, we all have those kinds of domains, right! ) A domain that is purchased and then just left to sit there will tend to accrue no advantage.

So here is an interpretation from Google perspective:
A domain that has been continuously indexed over time is more likely to have substantial and\or relevant content and is therefore less likely to be a spam site.

So get the domains and put something relevant, fresh and interesting on it. Even if is only an auto post plugin. That is right on target with what Google wants.
