Has anyone used a .co extension and if they have, what kind of success did they get with it or how did it compare to the .com's and .net's... I saw a thread the other day about the .info and was curious about this one...

Couldn't give you any solid info as I haven't messed with them much... I do have one .co in the dating niche... exact match for a 10k+ monthly highly competitive term, and it's ranking on the 3rd page right in Google. It's a high quality site with quality content, and that's about it. I haven't built any backlinks to it whatsoever, nor have I optimized the website to rank for that particular term (the site was made for PPC and POF advertising). So based on that tiny experience of mine, I know I can get it to page 1 with some link-building and optimization when I get around to it. Other than that, from what I've always read (though not always seen), the extension doesn't matter, search engines don't favor one extension over the other. But like I said, in my and many others' experience on this forum and elsewhere; .com, .net, and .org are preferred. |

I have some .co and have seen some ranking well. .com, .net .org are preferred. Remember to tell Google Webmaster tools what market you want to rank in. |

.CO is no better or worse then any of the other hundreds of county domains, like .SG, .IT, etc etc.

| Well, I have used them and I can tell you... they are simply no good for SEO, trust me on this. I even hate .info though some people seem to recommend them a little bit. Just stick your ass with .com, .net and .org and get that extra juice except if you know what you are doing in SEO |

The description of .co is "just like .com". I wouldn't buy one. Try and find a more relevant .com domain name. You don't have to give the exact keyword match, do you?

I have a three letter exact match .co that works quite well for me. I'm sitting on a couple of others I snagged during the landrush and havent gotten around to developing yet. |

.co was released to the world. It is not a normal country extension. .co was going to be the next BIG thing. Lot's of speculators. I just don't think it panned out. It did not replace anything. And the extension does not really matter, except for other country extensions. My only problem with it was the potential of type-in traffic. I could envision people add an m and making it a dot com. If search traffic is your goal, extension does not matter. .co is a viable alternative if others of your favorites are not there. But I'd even go for .biz, .tv, .info, etc. instead of paying a premium for a .co Paul | |

I want to say, never ever purchase a .Info domain. Although they rank just as well as any other domain, people who go to .Info domains -never- buy anything. People just trust .Com |

Thanks for your replies... I am thinking of doing something locally as far as web develpment for businesses and it came up when I was doing a bit of keyword research... The .com is taken, but the .net and .org is available and I just happened to remember the .co extension and wondered how others have faired with it for SEO purposes... It is a small town and only 3 other sites in the top 10, the others are YP and the like... Thanks for your insight and would love to still hear others experiences with the .co extension...

Try to exclude extensions that specify a particular country or geographical location. It will be given priority in the those countries where they are meant to be boosted.

.com, .org and .net are preferred! .co also does fine but as per theory not as well as .com, .org and .net!

.com is the best but dont really know about .co but i can tell you that if people can rank on the 1st page of google with subdomains like .blogspot.com or .webs.com then i dont think that it will be a big problem as long as you follow the basic principles.

.co is great if you're trying to rank in Google Colombia but I'm afraid it's not going to be as effective on Google.com as a .com/.net or .org would be. You can on the other hand add your .co domain to webmaster tools and change the "Geographic target" of the domain to United States or whatever Google you want it to rank on. Although Google said "it will rank .co domains appropriately if the content is globally targeted" I just don't see how a country code specific domain can outperform a general global domain such as .com.
