Default Are Categories Necessary? If so, please tell me why

Hi everyone,

I am building an authority review site. It's the biggest project I have ever set out to build. I have a few questions regarding the category section of an affiliate site. Here they are:

1) Does the name of the category matter very much for SEO? If so, what is best way to optimize? Should it be a supporting keyword of the domain?

2) Why are categories even necessary? I guess it's important for usability issues but doesn't it hurt you in the long run because it is buried deeper in your site. Why even use categories if you only intend your affiliate site to be 100 pages max.

Thank you in advance!
Steve
