Default Is Google Keyword Tool Correct?

Hi Fellow Warriors,

Just a quick one - I have a keyword rich domain (& got it to the top of google, well it is fluctuating between no.1 spot and no.5) for a day now, as soon as it reached here I was expecting 400-odd hits a day on the site, as google KW tool said it was 12,000 searches a month took place (therefore 400 a day) - Yet I have seen no increase in hits so I must ask is google keyword tool correct?

Many thanks in advance for your response.

Kindest regards,
Raja R

Their kw tool has been historically incorrect. I've usually seen comments
and complaints that the monthly volume was over-estimated.

Were those 12,000 monthly searches for exact or broad match?

The only precise way to find out the monthly volume is to run an adwords
ppc campaign for a month, or maybe two if you can stand it, and see what
the impressions are like. But, there are seasonal fluctuations and some markets
have greater fluctuations than others. So...

It was 12,100 exact to be precise.

Do you think it will be far off that?

Many thanks and kind regards,

I cannot give any kind of good answer for that. My guess is
you would not think so, but it's just a guess.

Also, much depends on your niche, number of ppc ads including
number of premium ppc ads - the ones directly above the organic
listings, what is displayed from your site in the serps, etc.

All those things contribute.

If you can, perhaps run a ppc ad for a week and make sure you're
on page one. Do it for your main keyword in question, and you will
see how many impressions in a week. Just use your site as the
destination and display url.

I guess I should mention that the kind of kw phrase this is for will
have some kind of impact. You know, where the surfer is in the
kw search cycle - buying kw, researching kw, etc.

Not to mention, Google shows personalized results now. If you click your site often, it will show higher for you than everyone else meaning you might not really even be 1 to 5. A good test is to Google 'SEO Serp Checker' and check with their proxy servers. Secondly, yes the Google keyword tool is often inaccurate.

I've always found that the longer the keyword (phrase) the more precise the Google keyword tool is (exact search).

Traffic verified on my own sites with the WP-plugin in my sig.

Software queries (MarketSamurai, MicroNicheFinder, etc.) in some niches tend to skew the search numbers.

The new Google goes back 12 months to get the average rather than the previous month (old tool), so seasonal search terms can be skewed. For example, the term "air conditioners" may have been getting 10,000 searches during the summer months and 0 searches in December, but if you searched in December it might show around 5,000, but that's not going to happen. Take a look at Google insights for the term "air conditioners" to get a better idea.

Here's the numbers that MarketSamurai uses for click distribution.

I've found it to be inaccurate. One of my websites ranks at #2 for a keyword that supposedly receives 90,000 monthly visitors. Guess how many visitors I receive per day for that specific keyword? About 9-10.

Well... lesson to be learned is this "always use exact match" when doing keyword research on Google or you are screwed for life.

See this keyword "six packs in six weeks"

When you just do the normal keyword research, it will tell you that your keyword is getting 6,600 local searches but when you finally switch to exact match then you will find out that the keyword is getting absolutely zero searches per month.
