Default Meta Titles in WP and Google Organic Rank. HELP!

I am using a static page right now for my WP site and it is doing very well, but. I suppose I could be doing better...

One BIG question though... My meta title in google is my pages title so... If i change my pages meta title and make my sites meta title the same should i still rank the same?

Simplified.
Currently I am using a page (www.site.com/page) for my home page. I want to change that meta title to something different for a better CTR in googles organic rankings. (I am using a SEO plugin that makes this much easier.)
If I change that pages meta title to something different and make my site home page (www.site.com) the same as my pages meta title was. Will my rank in google remain the same or will it change?

I really hope this isn't as confusing as I think it is.

Thank you,
Harrison

The answer is quite simple here. Your rank wheter it turns out being in the same position or not will change. You may or may not notice it if the change is minor. What happens is that gbot will run into your site then scrape your source code then reinput (aka reindex) it into it's serps(search engine ranking pages) If the change isn't major then you may not notice anything. You might notice a major improvement of decline in ranking. It really all depends. If it is just a title change the most likely 1 week timeframe for the gbot to come in and reindex you!

Hope that helps
Thanks.

I'm sitting in 3rd on page 1. My site has tons of content on it and is more than a year old.

All I want to do is change my meta title and remain in the same spot. I know meta title is the only thing google looks at still.

If your talking about "Page Title", I wouldn't change it once the page is ranking anyplace on page #1 in the SERPs for your keyword, IMO leave it alone.

Hey Harrison,

If you are already ranking well on page 1 i'd suggest just like the above post to not change it. If you must change it than you risk improving/losing search rankings. There is no way around it. If there is a change the googlebot will come scraping and reindexing/reranking. The choice is always up to you. Just make sure you weigh in the advantages/disadvantages.

Are you achieving this by going to Settings/Reading in your Wordpress dashboard and enabling the front page displays to a static page?

Are you more worried that you will end up with duplicate titles for your site or that by changing an existing title that you will lose ranking? I assume it is the latter. Basically, so long as your title and your description still contains the main keyword(s) that you are ranking for then all will be fine.

I haven't done anything yet. I'll say that first.

And I have changed my page title in the past with a plugin. I just scroll down while I am editing the page and enter my SEO details.
I am worried that I will lose my rank on page one.
I just want to change my page title so I can get a better CTR. As I said before.
You brought up a good point though. If I have duplicate titles on both my page and home page won't I get a penalty of some kind?

To create a static home page and avoid duplicate titles here is what I do..

1. Add a new Page and use "home" as the title. Enter all the content you want for the home page.
2. Go to Wordpress Settings and go to the Reading section.
3. Under the "Front Page Displays" section click on the Front Page drop down and choose the home page you just created.
4. Save it..
5. In your SEO plugin (I use all in one SEO), enter the home page title, description etc..
6. save it..

So long as your home page title and description and text still contains your target keywords then you should see no adverse affect in ranking. Especially so if the title and description remain the same for the home page.

You will also not have the problem of duplicate titles either as the SEO plugin takes care of that along with the static home page settings.

In your SEO plugin, platinum or ultimate, whatever it may be, there is a check box called "rewrite titles". You should check this...

Then you will set your homepage title tags and description on the general settings. Then you can change the setting for each individual blog post or page on the individual edit page.

Hope that helps.
