Hello Warriors, I've just installed wp piwik as against google analytics as I need to compare analytics results with others. Since installing it through the plugin provided, it's asking for a site id and a code...has anyone gotten around this? Please share your guide. Thanks Tim |

I don't know a thing about WP Piwik, but I just installed PIWIK for one of my WordPress sites a couple of days ago. Took me about an hour. Could do it in 10-15 minutes now, so it's not that hard. It has a nice interface with some cool features like real-time traffic updates and SEO stats for the site. The installation steps follow. PIWIK HostGator Installation for HostGator NOTE: For full detail, see the installation instructions at: Installing Piwik - Piwik. 1. Download PIWIK from: Piwik - Web analytics - Open source and unzip it to your hard drive. 2. Copy the PIWIK folder from your hard drive to the domain folder. (NOTE: Your PIWIK folder must go in the domain folder for the site you are tracking because of Hostgator security restrictions. There is another option for getting around the HostGator issues, but that involves contacting them and getting them to change the settings on your account. Just refer to the installation instructions the details.) 3. Type in www.your-domain-name.com/piwik/. This will bring up the PIWIK installation screen. This screen will guide you through the installation process. 4. Database Setup This was the most involved screen for the PIWIK setup. 4.1 First use the HostGator CPanel to create the database and user. Use a STRONG password. (I first tried having PIWIK create the database, but that did not work.) 4.2 Fill out the Database Setup screen in PIWIK. This is the 2nd screen of the installation process. Fill out as follows: (1) Database server: leave as-is (2) Login: Input the database username you created preceded by the prefix for the site, e.g. accountname_username. (3) Password: Use the password you made for the database. (4) Database name: Use the database name preceded by the prefix for the site, e.g. accountname_mypiwikdatabase. (5) Table prefix: piwik_ (6) Adapter: PDO_MYSQL 5. Super User Setup This part is easy and self explanatory. Just make sure you use a strong password. 6. JavaScript Tracking Code This is the tracking code you put on your WordPress blog, just as you would Google Analytics code or that for any other analytics software. For HostGator you have to revise the JavaScript code per the instructions at: Troubleshooting - Piwik (Look under: How do I configure Piwik when mod_security is enabled?) These instructions essentially tell you to add the following line of code: piwikTracker.setRequestMethod('POST'); BEFORE this line of code: piwikTracker.trackPageView(); So you just have to copy and paste the JavaScript code to Notepad, copy and paste the line of code as described above, and then copy and paste the revised tracking code into your blog. When you are done, you'll be able to log into your PIWIK admin console and check out your stats. Hope that helps. Alex

Just install Piwik in a directory on your website and insert the code in your footer.php page manually. Works like a charme.

I've installed Piwik on one of my domains and compare the results with Google Analytics. Piwik is much better because it shows you the ips of visitors, where they go, what links they exit through, what the exact referer is when they come from another site....it has all kinds of cool features that Google Analytics doesn't. I don't have it on WP, but installed it using php5 on godaddy. Was really easy to install. I also like how Piwik allows you to use multiple urls/domains for one tracking code. I don't think GA does that, but I've never really tried it. Don't think it does though.

Thanks so much for the tip. I set up a database, installed Piwik, pasted the tracking code into the footer.php and… nothing. No data in the Piwik dashboard at all. That’s how I found this thread, and I thank you all for your input. I tried a number of things. Some have said they got their Piwik “Last visits graph”, and other data, to show up by wrapping the tracking code in {literal} {/literal} tags. Others got it working by using the Piwik Analytics WP Plugin. Another guy said one needs to go to the Piwik tmp folder and change the permissions to 777 on the tmp folder and the, templates_c, and cache folders located inside the tmp folder. I tried all of the above, and more, but none of this worked for me. I had HostGator whitelist my account, which allowed installation, but Piwik wouldn’t return data. I followed your piwikTracker.setRequestMethod('POST'); tip and that seems to have done the trick. You are blessed among Warriors, and I thank you. Here are a couple tips for those who are planning to install Piwik. Here’s a great tutorial on installing Piwik How to Install Piwik for WordPress and Drupal, real time web analytics If you encounter a 404 error in the first stage of setting Piwik up try this. Instead of entering www . YourWebSite . com try YourWebSite . com without the www (spaces in these examples intentionally provided to keep these from becoming links). That resolved the 404 error for me. Thanks again, Alex. You’re the GREATEST! John
