Seo perspective .us vs .com for USA

Hi !,

Could you suggest me.
Which is a better approach for USA targeting

1..us domain extension

OR

2..com extension with Geo Target set as USA in Google Analytics..

I also have a doubt ..If you have .com (& .uk,.fr,.de country specific..) for USA why .us is there ?

I rarely see .us domain in SERP..Am i incorrect ?

Get the .com

I don't see that many (if any at all) .us domains in the serps. So definitely get the .com extension if it's available.
