Default How to SEO breaking news and events?

I'm looking for some pointers/guides etc. on how to effectively research keywords on breaking news stories and short term events. For example if I had a site focused on selling T-shirts about the death of Osama Bin Laden (I don't...but it's not a bad idea), or if I wanted to drive traffic to a site about the London 2012 Olympics, the traditional Adwords keyword tool, Market Samurai etc. will most likely not give me the up-to the minute kind of results I need to accurately determine search volume and competition for relevant keywords.

For the Bin Laden site, I'd need up-to-the minute data on search volume and for the Olympics site, I'd need to anticipate what people WILL be searching for when it gets closer to those dates.

So...any pointers, tools, ebooks, articles, blogs etc. that address these issues effectively?
