Low enough to make it readable and user-friendly and not look "contrived" - is the main thing.

At Ezine Articles, anything over 2% gets an automated rejection on submission, and I don't think that's a bad guideline, myself. I don't think about it, when I'm actually writing, but would certainly want to remove some keywords if I ever got above 2%. Readability is what matters, to me. I don't count them, but 1% or 1.5% is generally fine, I think.

I never pay attention to the keyword density. I write with the reader in mind, and use the keywords where appropriate for the content. Worrying about percentages seems a bit silly to me.

Google targets relevant content, so if you want to target for a specific keyword then you will want to make that keyword stand out in Google's eyes.

Personally i say around 3%, but thats just what i go on. This way it makes what i write readable but also should do well for SEO.

I wouldn't worry about keyword density. I prefer to write for my readers. If you put out good material, they'll come.

On ezine, goarticles, and a few other sites, high kw % will be rejected. Generally, anything over 2-3% comes off as spammy. Why now write higher quality content and include some of your secondary or supporting kws instead?

For example, if your keyword is "stop dog barking" you can use that up to about 2.5% and then use other variations like "stop dogs barking" or "stop a dog from barking" and that sort of thing.

Also, try to include your main kw in your title, the first sentence of the body, the last sentence of the body and somewhere in the middle.

Generally try to put the keyword/phrase in the MIDDLE of a sentence as well (rather than first or last).

For example, if you keyword is "stop dog barking" write something like "The main key to stop dog barking is to determine the reason for their barking."
NOT this: "Stop dog barking by figuring out why they're barking"
NOT this: "Find out more about how to stop dog barking."

I write (or edit those submitted by content writers) for my readers. But i still keep keyword density in mind. There's no reason you can't do both.

You can do all of these things for 500-750 word article, and still have a create great experience for the reader:

-Keyword in Title, Keyword in meta tags, keyword in description
-Keyword density - 1.75 to 2.50%
-Keyword including in H1, H2, H3 tags
-Keyword in first and last sentences
-variations of Keyword in Alt Text of images in post

With those guidelines i can outrank sites with much more backlinks.
