Need Advise About Link Exchange, Should I Take it Off From my Site?

So I have a website with
PR 4
built in 2007
backlinks 3,000 (all types)
150 posts (more than 500 words each)
traffic - 3,000 UV a day prior to the big update

...but traffic went down by more than 50%, just 1,000 - 1500 UV a day which started in April.

I update it regularly and two months ago, I purchased 3,000 profile backlinks and then last month, 50 .edu sites...but up to now, the traffic still does not improve.

I am thinking my Link exchange partners might have been the reasons my ranking went down...but they had been there for more than a year already, could it be that google just discovered it now and they are discounting it.... I have more 18 two way link exchange partners...

Do you think its best to remove this link exchange in my sites?
