I have a domain (www.domain.com) that has ranked pretty good for several of its keywords (the posts are all in English). Now I'm considering having a subdomain (Indonesian.domain.com) of which posts will be in Indonesian. My concern is: will this Indonesian subdomain hurt my already ranked good English keywords? Thank you |

Why do you think it would hurt? 2 different website, 2 different things. Just what a subdomain was designed for. Be sure and put links all over the English site that say read this in Indonesian. Even put clickable country flag like the big boys do it. Paul |

Yes, and also: 1) Register the subdomain in Webmaster Tools as a different site (perfectly OK) 2) Set the geographic target of that site in WT to Indonesia if that is where you are targetting traffic from. 3) Make sure the meta language tags in your html are set to the ISO codes for Indonesian (or whatever the exact language/dialect would be) for the subdomain. There are millions of multilingual sites around, even not hosted on separate subdomains (I have one), so you should be just fine. |

Hi, From my experience, bi-lingual sites won't hurt SEO. I have several sites like this. I don't even register subdomains to split the languages. Each page holds 2 languages together - English and Malay. Also some pages are English only and some Malay only. Take a look at this LIVE example : www.pengasih.net In fact after I do this, the traffic volume increased 4 fold. It then stabilized at 3 fold than the previous (when they were using separate subdomains for English and Malay). And then after 4 months, it got Google PR4. I did the same for another site, the result is the same. SEO is about quality content, relevancy and a couple of tweaks. |
