I seen some sites which having address like www2.domainname.com or www3.domainname.com Why www2 and www3? What its use? |

I think it means nothing. It's just the same with blog.domain.com or forum.domain.com or www.domain.com |

Its used for extremely large sites with a ton of traffic. One poster is right, it is just a mirror. The reason they have it is basically for updates, maintenance, and just in case something happens. Imagine if google was down for 20 minutes just making an update. Not good right? Lets say one of the servers were down and they needed to replace a part... an hour is too long for a major site to be down. So they use the mirrors, www2, www3, www1.

Both Ian Varnava and yukon are correct. Currently our company is using www3 to switch from an old system to a newer one. It keeps the transition running smooth (from the companies side) so users don't notice any changes. |
