Default why check backlink counts?

I see a lot of posts from folks wanting to know what backlink tracking software works best.

My question is this:

Why do you want to track your backlinks?

There must be a good reason for doing so, I just can't figure out why.

It's not like Google reports all the links they find. If they did then we would be able to easily reverse engineer their algorithm.

So if the info reported to the link checkers is inaccurate what does that say about the info you get back from the tracking software?

What exactly will you do with the info?

From experience I have found out that it is better to submit links and then forget about them forever. Then be pleasantly surprised when your site hits page one from your efforts.

What say you on this topic Warriors?

Why would I want to see their links? The ones that Google reports will not be the ones supplying the real juice anyways.

Not Really...

It's like PR, a number to obsess over. Even if you know all the links you have inbound... no one can say with any certainty how much (if any) those links are counting for when it comes to SERP rankings.

In the beginning many people (including myself) struggle to get a handle on their SEO. There is so much info that is argued and debated its hard to tell what you should be paying attention to.

Solid numbers like Google PR and Back-link counts are quantifiable and easy to be come obsessed with as people try to figure things out.

Matt, nice to hear from you here. I have two buys with you and have not gotten a report in like 4 weeks?

To answer your question, I think for many of us we just like to see our hard work "show up". But you know what you are right because at the end of the day we will not see everything. At the same time YSE does show me many competitors with thousands of inlinks and that does have to carry some weight. So I personally think its both:

Don't put too much weight on worrying about the reports but at the same time it is good to check in and see if anything you are doing is working.

At the end of the day, are you moving up the SERPS and sticking? That's my true test.

Those numbers are not solid at all though. As far as PR goes you need to be on the index to benefit from it. With backlink counts the counts are never accurate. So maybe newbies should focus only on one thing and one thing only. Submitting links.

Yeah there is a lot of info from all types of "gurus" and its funny how some contradict. Recently I saw how one "big" guy loves profile links while another said they are complete crap and waste of time. Trial and error for each of us and I think Google will continue to feel they are doing their job if they keep us guessing

What reports were you looking for? Did you set up support tickets and submitted your campaign info on them? If so and we acknowledged as much then that is the only report we'll give until your sites reach page one (if that is the service you purchased from us).

Edit: We did just hire Heather Burch to help us give monthly reports out. So what I said is not entirely accurate as to what our system will be like in a couple of weeks. Besides, handing out monthly serp rank reports will give us an opportunity to tack a special p.s. or two. For more info on this pleased let me know via one of your tickets).

Checking backlinks is a chronic waste of time and is something that ends up causing nothing but frustration and confusion for a lot of people getting into seo. The numbers you get back from certain backlink checkers will be so far off the number you know you've got that it's the least important part of seo to even consider.

Not all links are equal, so the time spent checking the number of backlinks is better of checking the SERP ranking, because at the end of the day that's what you care about.

A handful of high quality, high PR links is going to move your ranking more than 50 spammy links.
