Do I Link back to my main site or my pages?

Alright so I have a site How To Make Solar Panels and want to rank for the keyword phrase "how to make solar panels" and well I haven't had much luck. So I'm wondering when I create backlinks, should I send them to my main site or to certain pages within my site? I have a post that is called "How to Make A Solar Cell At Home" and if you exact search that on google, then I am on the first page (#5). So I guess that is a little promise through the crack.

So I guess what I'm asking is should I try to get my main site to rank in google, or the individual pages? And do I stand a chance ranking on the first page on google or am I wasting my time?

I'm new to the whole backlinking and SEO thing, and just need a little direction.

Both. You should backlinks individual pages and your domain.
