Default What should I do if the keywords I need are very competitive

Good morning,

I have read many recommendations about ranking number one on Google, with the first of these usually being selection of keywords. My problem is that the keywords I need to focus on the promote this product are very competitive.

What solutions do I have?

Your choices are to keep searching for less competitive keywords - sometimes you might think you've done as much as you can, but you can usually come up with some new ways of phrasing things and searching new keywords to find some that aren't so competitive.

A good tip is to go into the google keyword tool and enter a relevant website instead of a keyword phrase. This often brings up new keywords that I hadn't thought of looking at before.

Secondly, you can go for the keywords despite the fact they're competitive. Accept the fact that it'll take more work and a bit more time, but nothing is impossible.

Ruth made a great point about accepting that SEO takes work and time to see results. I would suggest picking one or two main keywords that you will focus on over the long-term. These are going to be the most broad keywords, and will most likely have the most competition.

Going forward from there, take your time to find some long-tail keywords of 3+ words that have low competition. Focus on ranking for these first. As you rank for more and more long-tails, you should see improvement in your main keyword rankings over time.

How much competitive keywords are? Did you check broad and exact matches? Did you use any software to determine competitivity?

You want to look at the top 10 in google when you type in the keyword..do not use quotes.

This is your competition.....what you mean by competitive is not clear....what methods/software did you use to come to the conclusion that it's too competitive?

Yeah, very good point. Actual buyer never searches in qoutes. So to check first 10 pages in search results is very important. I would stay away from keyword if there is copetition with PR5 and above in broad results and PR3 and above in results with qoutes.

Try out Long tail keywords instead, you would get some results for that.
The only option you have is looking for some other related keywords...

Also try looking for misspelled keywords. You would be surprised at how many results come from just that. Many of my own articles have strategically targeted misspelled keywords in some extremely competitive niches. If the misspellings are rather common and subtle, it will not affect readership quality.

Now I agree with buyers not using quotes, I guess in SEO you should also put yourself in the shoes of those common people and just try to erase all those knowledge about SEO, SMO - and just try to be realistic. Also thanks for including the PR of a site as a basis in filtering those competitors.
