Default Domain Choice: Synonyms

I found an uncompetitive niche with 1600 exact match local searches for two different keyword phrases.

They are each four word phrases. Words #1, #3, and #4 are identical. Only word #2 is different. The words are synonyms and refer to a type of product that is refered to by either of the two names.

Should I take both of these domains to account for both search phrases? If so, should I redirect one site to the other or create two completely separate sites?

The site(s) will have only three to six articles.

I don't know if you need both domains. I have had sites that also rank for other keywords I have optimized them for, even though they don't have them in the url.

E.g. Let's say my site is dogfood.com. I have got it to rank for 'dog food', and also for 'best dog food'. Having the keywords in the url really helps, but you can ALSO rank other words well for it. It's all about on-page SEO and getting high PR backlinks with the right anchor text.

I wouldn't take 2 domains. You will do just fine targeting 2 keywords with one domain.

I agree, only one site should be needed. Within the content of that site, optimize your content to cover all other search terms and you'll be fine
